MTL (mouth-to-lung) and DTL (direct-to-lung) are two ways of inhaling from a vape. With MTL you pull vapour into your mouth, then breathe it in, the way you'd smoke a cigarette. With DTL you breathe straight into your lungs in one go, like a deep breath through a straw. MTL uses a tight draw, higher-resistance coils and stronger nicotine. DTL uses an open draw, low-resistance coils, more power and weaker nicotine.
The device you choose usually decides your style, which is why this sits in our vape kits hub.
The differences at a glance
| MTL | RDL | DTL | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Draw | Tight | Medium | Loose, airy |
| Inhale | Mouth, then lungs | Mostly lungs | Straight to lungs |
| Vapour | Low to moderate | Moderate | High |
| Coil resistance | Usually above 1 ohm | Around 0.6 to 1 ohm | Below 1 ohm (sub-ohm) |
| Power | Low | Moderate | Higher |
| Usual liquid | 10mg to 20mg nic salt, 50/50 freebase | Lower-strength nic salt or freebase | 3mg or 6mg high-VG freebase |
| Typical device | Pod kit, vape pen | Pod mod | Box mod with sub-ohm tank |
The resistance ranges are a general guide, not hard rules. Manufacturers label their coils for MTL or DTL, and that label is what you should go by.
MTL: mouth-to-lung

MTL is where nearly every former disposable user starts, because disposables were MTL devices. The draw is tight, so you take a slower, longer pull. The vapour is modest and the nicotine hit is noticeable at the throat.
Almost every compact pod vape kit and most vape pens are MTL. They pair with nic salts at 10mg or 20mg/ml, the UK legal maximum. The low vapour volume is the reason higher strengths work here: you're taking in less vapour per puff.
DTL: direct-to-lung
DTL feels very different. The airflow is wide open, you breathe in hard and steadily, and you get a big cloud. It needs a device with a large battery and a sub-ohm tank, usually a box mod or a bigger pod mod.
Because you're inhaling far more vapour per puff, DTL vapers use low nicotine strengths. High strengths at that volume would feel harsh. The liquid is usually high-VG freebase, often a shortfill topped up with a nicotine shot. Our vape tank vs pod guide explains why tanks are the norm for DTL.
RDL: the middle ground
Restricted direct-to-lung is a looser MTL or a tighter DTL, depending on how you look at it. Many pod mods and some pod kits with adjustable airflow can do it. It's a common next step for MTL vapers who want a bit more vapour without moving to a full box mod setup.
How to tell which one you want
A few quick questions:
- Did you smoke cigarettes or use disposables? Start MTL.
- Do you want a strong throat hit from a small device? MTL with nic salt.
- Do you care about big clouds or lots of flavour at low strength? DTL.
- Not sure? A pod kit with adjustable airflow lets you go from tight MTL to a looser RDL by turning a dial.
If this is your first reusable vape, MTL is the easier place to start. The best vape for beginners guide explains why, and our types of vapes page shows which devices fall into each camp.
Can one device do both?
Sort of. Plenty of pod kits have an airflow slider or dial, and opening it right up turns a tight MTL draw into something closer to RDL. Some pod mods ship with two coils in the box, one rated for MTL and one for DTL, so you can switch by changing the coil.
What you can't really do is turn a compact MTL pod kit into a proper DTL setup. The small battery, the higher-resistance coil and the 2ml pod aren't built for it. Going the other way is easier: many tanks accept MTL coils, though a big box mod is a lot of device to carry for a tight draw. If you think you'll want both styles, a pod mod with swappable coils is the most flexible middle ground.
Picking the right e-liquid for your style
The draw style and the liquid have to match. A thick, high-VG liquid in a small MTL coil can leave you with dry hits. A 20mg nic salt in a sub-ohm DTL tank will be far too much. Our e-liquid hub covers the liquid side, and nic salt vs freebase explains which nicotine type suits which draw.
Questions people ask
What does MTL mean in vaping?
MTL stands for mouth-to-lung. You draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale it into your lungs, like smoking a cigarette. MTL devices have a tight draw.
What does DTL mean in vaping?
DTL stands for direct-to-lung. You inhale straight into your lungs in one breath, with a loose, open draw and a lot more vapour.
Which is better for ex-smokers, MTL or DTL?
Most ex-smokers find MTL more familiar because the draw is similar to a cigarette. It also suits the 10mg and 20mg nic salts many former smokers use.
What is RDL vaping?
RDL means restricted direct-to-lung. It sits between the two: a looser draw than MTL but tighter than full DTL, usually on a pod mod.
