How a prefilled pod kit works
Every prefilled pod contains three things: the e-liquid, a coil with its wick, and the mouthpiece. The battery underneath supplies the power. When the pod runs dry, the coil goes with it. That means you get a fresh coil every time you change pods, so you rarely get the slow flavour fade that refillable users deal with.
A typical prefilled pod kit includes:
- the battery, charged by USB-C
- one or more prefilled pods
- a charging cable
Extra pods come in multi-packs, usually in the brand's own flavour range. Pods from one brand don't fit another brand's battery.
In the UK each pod can hold no more than 2ml of nicotine e-liquid, and the nicotine strength can't go above 20mg/ml. Many prefilled pods are 20mg nic salts, and some ranges also come in lower strengths.
Why they're legal when disposables aren't
Under the UK single-use vape rules, a vape must have a rechargeable battery, a refillable or replaceable container for e-liquid, and a replaceable coil. The rules count a prefilled pod as a replaceable container, and a coil sitting inside a replaceable pod counts as replaceable. The pods also have to be sold separately. Getting the most from each pod
A few habits help a prefilled pod last.
- Take steady puffs rather than long, hard pulls one after another. The wick needs a moment to re-soak.
- Store the kit upright when you can, and keep it out of hot cars.
