How Long Does a Vape Pod Last?

How long a vape pod lasts in puffs and days, why it varies so much, how long refillable coils last, and the signs it's time for a new pod.

A 2ml vape pod typically lasts anywhere from most of a day to several days, depending on how much you vape. Puff counts vary widely, but for a rough reference, 2ml disposables such as the Elf Bar 600 were marketed at around 600 puffs. On a refillable kit there's a second clock: the coil, which commonly lasts somewhere between a few days and a couple of weeks before the flavour fades. Those are typical ranges, not promises. Your habits decide where you land.

Two different questions

"How long does a pod last" can mean two things, and the answer depends on which kit you have.

On a prefilled pod, it's how long the liquid lasts. When the pod is empty, you replace it, coil and all.

On a refillable pod, the liquid runs out often and you just top it up. What wears out is the coil. So the real question is how long the coil lasts.

How long the liquid lasts

UK law caps any nicotine pod at 2ml, set by the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016. So every pod starts with, at most, the same amount.

How fast that 2ml goes depends on:

  • Puff length. A three-second draw uses more liquid than a one-second one.
  • How often you vape. Obvious, but it's the biggest factor.
  • Power. Higher wattage vaporises more liquid per puff.
  • Airflow. A looser draw tends to pull more vapour.

Because puff length varies so much between people, puff counts on packaging are best treated as a loose guide. When you see a kit advertised with thousands of puffs, check whether that figure covers a pack of several pods.

How long a coil lasts

On a refillable kit, coil life is the number that matters. It varies more than liquid does.

Factor Shortens coil life Lengthens coil life
E-liquid Very sweet dessert or candy flavours Lighter fruits, menthol, mint
Habit Chain vaping Pauses between puffs
Pod level Vaping it nearly dry Topping up early
Power Above the coil's rated range Within the rated range
Setup Skipping priming Five to ten minutes' soak on a new coil

With all the good habits, most people see a coil last a week or more. With heavy use and very sweet liquid, it can be down to a few days. Our refillable pod vape guide has more on getting the most from coils.

Signs a pod or coil is done

You don't need to count puffs. Your mouth will tell you.

  • Flavour getting flatter over a day or two.
  • Vapour feeling thinner.
  • A harsh or stale edge creeping in.
  • A clear burnt taste, which means it's past its best.

On a prefilled pod, a burnt taste near the end usually means it's empty enough to swap, even if you can see a little liquid left. On a refillable, a burnt taste with a full pod means the coil needs changing. The burnt taste guide explains the difference.

How to make a pod last longer

A few small changes help more than you'd think.

  1. Take steady draws of a couple of seconds rather than long, hard pulls.
  2. Leave a few seconds between puffs so the wick can re-soak.
  3. Top up refillable pods before they run low.
  4. Prime every new coil for five to ten minutes. Our how to refill a pod vape guide shows how.
  5. Keep power within the coil's printed range.
  6. If you vape a lot of very sweet flavours, mix in something lighter. A mint like spearmint or a fruit ice like peach ice is easier on the coil than a heavy dessert.

Does nicotine strength affect how long a pod lasts?

Indirectly, yes. If your strength is too low, you tend to vape more often to feel satisfied, and the pod empties faster. That's one reason people moving from 20mg disposables often stay on 20mg nic salt to begin with. Our nic salt vs freebase guide explains the strengths.

Prefilled or refillable: which lasts longer?

Measured per pod of liquid, they're the same, since both hold up to 2ml. The difference is what you replace. With prefilled, you replace the whole pod each time. With refillable, you refill the liquid and only replace the coil every so often, which is usually cheaper. The prefilled pod vape guide and the best pod vape guide compare the two in more depth.

Questions people ask

How many puffs are in a 2ml vape pod?

There's no single number, because puff length and power vary so much. As a reference point, 2ml disposables like the Elf Bar 600 were marketed at around 600 puffs. Treat any puff count as a rough guide.

How long should a prefilled pod last?

For many people, somewhere between part of a day and a few days. A heavy vaper might finish one in a day; a light vaper might make one last most of a week.

How often should I change a refillable coil?

When the flavour fades or tastes burnt. For a lot of people that's somewhere between a few days and a couple of weeks, depending on how much they vape and what liquid they use.

Why do some pods advertise thousands of puffs?

Usually because the figure covers several pods in a pack, or it assumes very short puffs. UK nicotine pods can't hold more than 2ml each.
