Why Does My Vape Taste Burnt? Causes and Fixes

Why your vape tastes burnt, from dry hits and unprimed coils to sweet e-liquid and worn wicks, and the fixes for refillable and prefilled pods.

A burnt taste means the cotton wick in your coil got hot without enough e-liquid in it. Either it was never properly soaked, it dried out because the pod was low or you were vaping too fast, or the coil is simply worn out. Fixing it is usually quick: refill, slow down, give it a few seconds between puffs, or change the coil. If the coil has properly scorched, no amount of waiting will bring it back.

First, figure out which kind of burnt it is

There are two different problems that both get called "burnt".

A dry hit is a sudden, harsh, hot puff that tastes like burning paper. It happens when the wick is dry at that moment. The cause is usually temporary, but if you keep vaping through it the cotton scorches for good.

A burnt coil is a constant burnt or stale taste on every puff, even with a full pod. The damage is done and the coil needs replacing.

Causes and fixes

A used vape coil with dark burnt cotton next to a fresh coil
Cause What it feels like Fix
New coil not primed Burnt from the very first puff Replace the coil; prime the next one for five to ten minutes
Pod low or empty Burnt as liquid runs out Refill (refillable) or swap pod (prefilled)
Chain vaping Hot, dry puffs after several in a row Wait a few seconds between puffs
Power too high Harsh, hot vapour Lower the wattage if your kit allows it
Thick high-VG liquid Dry hits even when full Use a 50/50 or nic salt liquid
Worn coil Gradual fade, then a stale or burnt taste Replace the coil or pod
Sweet e-liquid residue Coil wears out quicker than expected Expect shorter coil life; alternate with lighter flavours

Priming

This catches out almost everyone on a refillable kit. When you fit a new coil or pod, the cotton is dry. If you fire it straight away, it scorches on the first puff. Fill the pod and leave it upright for five to ten minutes. Our how to refill a pod vape guide covers the steps.

Running low

When the liquid drops, the wick can't draw it up fast enough. On a refillable pod, top up before it gets near the bottom. On a prefilled pod, a burnt taste near the end usually means it's done, even if a thin layer of liquid is still visible.

Puffing too fast

Every puff uses up the liquid in the wick, and the wick needs a moment to soak back up. Take steady draws of a couple of seconds and leave a few seconds between them. If you find yourself chain vaping, your strength may be too low. See our nic salt vs freebase guide.

Too much power

Some kits let you set wattage. Running a coil above its recommended range heats it faster than the wick can keep up. The range is usually printed on the coil or in the manual.

The wrong liquid

Small MTL coils are made for thinner liquids, typically nic salts around 50/50 VG/PG. Very thick high-VG liquid soaks in too slowly and causes dry hits.

Sweet flavours

Sweet liquids tend to leave residue that builds up on the coil, often called gunk. Dessert, candy and some very sweet fruit flavours are the usual culprits. They're still worth vaping, just expect to change coils a bit more often. Mints such as cool mint or spearmint are generally gentler on coils.

Refillable vs prefilled: what you can do

On a refillable pod you control most of the causes. Prime properly, keep the pod topped up, use the right liquid, and change the coil when it's tired. If the coil is built into the pod, replace the pod.

On a prefilled pod, the coil comes with the pod, so your options are simpler. Take slower puffs, don't vape it down to the last drop, and swap it when it turns harsh. If a brand-new prefilled pod tastes burnt straight away, leave it upright for a few minutes and try again gently; if it's still burnt, the pod may be faulty. Our prefilled pod vape guide explains how they work.

Spotting a worn coil early

Coils usually fade before they burn. Watch for:

  • flavour getting weaker over a few days
  • vapour feeling thinner
  • a sweeter liquid starting to taste muddy
  • dark discolouration in the wick, if you can see it

Change the coil at that point and you'll rarely get the full burnt taste. For typical coil and pod lifespans, see how long does a vape pod last.

Questions people ask

Can you fix a burnt vape coil?

Not really. Once the cotton has scorched, the taste stays. Replace the coil, or the whole pod if the coil is built in.

Why does my new coil taste burnt?

Almost always because it wasn't primed. A new coil needs five to ten minutes to soak in e-liquid before you fire it.

Why does my prefilled pod taste burnt?

Usually because it's empty or nearly empty, even if you can still see a little liquid. The wick can't pull up enough to stay wet. Swap to a new pod.

Does sweet e-liquid burn coils faster?

It tends to. Sweeteners leave residue on the coil, which builds up and can cause a burnt taste sooner than with lighter flavours.
