The best pod vape is the one that matches how you actually vape. For most UK adults switching from disposables, that means a small mouth-to-lung (MTL) kit with an auto-draw, a 2ml pod and a nic salt between 10mg and 20mg. After that, the big decision is prefilled or refillable. Prefilled is simpler. Refillable costs less to run and gives you far more flavour choice. Everything below helps you narrow it down without wading through spec sheets.
Start with one question: do you want to fill it yourself?
Every pod vape on sale in the UK now falls into one of two camps.
Prefilled pod kits use sealed pods that arrive full of e-liquid. You click one in, vape it until it's empty, then swap in a fresh one. The battery stays and gets recharged. If you liked the "open the box and go" side of disposables, this is the nearest thing.
Refillable pod kits use an empty pod that you fill from a 10ml bottle. Some pods have a built-in coil and get replaced every so often. Others take separate coils, so you only swap the small coil and keep the pod. You get any flavour from any brand, and bottles usually work out cheaper per ml than prefilled pods.
We go into both properly in our prefilled pod vape guide and refillable pod vape guide. If you're not sure which camp you're in, here's the short version.
| Prefilled | Refillable | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Click in a pod, done | Fill, wait for the coil to soak, then vape |
| Flavour choice | Limited to the brand's pod range | Any 10ml e-liquid that suits the coil |
| Mess | None | Occasional spill while learning |
| Running cost | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Waste | A whole pod each time | Just a coil or pod every week or two |
| Best for | Ex-disposable users who want zero fuss | Anyone happy to spend a minute filling |
Pick a draw style before you pick a brand

Draw is how the vape feels when you inhale, and it matters more than any other feature.
Mouth-to-lung (MTL)
You draw vapour into your mouth first, then inhale. It's tight, similar to a cigarette, and it's how almost every disposable worked. MTL kits run higher-resistance coils, roughly 1 ohm and up, at low power. They pair well with nic salts.
Restricted direct-lung (RDL)
A looser, airier pull that goes more or less straight to the lungs. You get more vapour and usually use a lower nicotine strength. Lots of pod kits can do both MTL and RDL with an airflow slider or a different coil.
If you came from disposables and liked them, start with MTL. You can always loosen the airflow later.
The specs that actually matter
You don't need to read a full spec sheet. Four things decide how a pod kit fits into your day.
Battery
Pod kits use built-in batteries charged over USB-C. Bigger capacity means fewer charges, but also a slightly heavier device. If you vape a lot, or you're out all day, lean towards a bigger battery. If you vape now and then, a smaller, lighter kit is fine.
Pod capacity
UK law caps any nicotine tank or pod at 2ml. Some pods are smaller. A full 2ml pod is the sensible choice for most people, since it means less refilling or swapping. Our guide to how long a vape pod lasts covers what that looks like day to day.
Activation
Auto-draw kits fire when you inhale. Button kits fire when you press. Many have both. Auto-draw is the easiest to live with, and it's what disposable users are used to.
Output control
Some kits have a fixed output. Others let you adjust wattage or have a few power modes. Adjustable power is handy if you swap between coils, but it isn't something a beginner needs.
Nic salt strength: get this right first
Most pod vapes are built for nicotine salts, which feel smoother at higher strengths than traditional freebase liquid. In the UK the legal maximum for any nicotine e-liquid is 20mg/ml.
- 20mg is the most common strength for people moving off disposables, since most disposables sold in the UK were 20mg.
- 10mg suits lighter vapers, or anyone trying to step down.
- Below 10mg is usually freebase territory, often used in RDL setups.
If you vape constantly and still want more, you may be on too low a strength. If your throat feels rough, you might be too high. Our nic salt vs freebase guide explains the difference in more detail.
Real UK pod kits, by type
We're not ranking these, and we haven't put them through lab tests. They're examples of current kits sold in the UK that show what each category looks like. Model numbers change often, so check the latest version before you buy.
Simple refillable MTL kits
- Uwell Caliburn (G series). Long-running range of slim refillable pod kits with auto-draw and button firing.
- Vaporesso XROS series. Refillable kits with adjustable airflow, popular with people who want MTL and the option of a looser draw.
- OXVA Xlim series. Refillable pod kits with adjustable output, often picked by people who want a bit more control.
Prefilled pod systems
- Elf Bar ELFA Pro. A rechargeable battery that takes sealed, prefilled ELFA pods.
- Lost Mary BM6000. A rechargeable kit that ships with prefilled pods and takes replacement pod packs.
Both prefilled systems came from brands that used to make disposables, which is partly why they feel familiar.
What we'd pick for different people
You've vaped disposables for years and just want the same thing without the waste. Go prefilled, MTL, 20mg.
You want to save money and try more flavours. A refillable MTL kit with a 2ml pod, plus a few 10ml nic salts. Have a look through our flavour library for ideas, from banana ice to cool mint.
You like big clouds. An RDL-capable refillable kit at a lower strength.
You're brand new to vaping. Read our best vape for beginners guide first. The short answer is a simple auto-draw MTL kit.
Before you buy
A few checks that save hassle later:
- Make sure replacement pods or coils for that kit are easy to find. A kit with no spares is useless after a few weeks.
- Check the pod is 2ml if you want the longest time between refills.
- Look for USB-C charging. It's now the norm, but not universal on older stock.
- Buy from a UK retailer that sells TPD-compliant products, so you know the strength and pod size are within UK limits.
Questions people ask
What is the best pod vape for someone coming off disposables?
Most people coming off disposables get on best with a mouth-to-lung pod kit and a 10mg or 20mg nic salt. If you want zero maintenance, a prefilled system is closest to what you're used to. If you want lower running costs and more flavour choice, go refillable.
Are pod vapes legal in the UK?
Yes. Since 1 June 2025 single-use vapes can't be sold in the UK, but reusable vapes with a rechargeable battery, a refillable or replaceable pod and a replaceable coil are still legal to sell to adults.
How big can a pod be in the UK?
Under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016, a tank or pod that holds nicotine e-liquid can't be bigger than 2ml, and nicotine strength is capped at 20mg/ml.
Should I pick a pod kit with adjustable wattage?
Only if you think you'll use it. Auto-draw kits with a fixed output are simpler and suit most beginners. Adjustable wattage helps when you swap between coil types or want to tune warmth and vapour.
